Abstract
Ferruginous sand is decolourized by wetting the sand with a caustic alkali solution, heating to substantial dryness and treating the resulting product with a mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. The sand may be washed with water prior to the acid treatment, and the washing water, after separation, may be concentrated for re-use. The caustic alkalis specified are the hydroxides of sodium, potassium and lithium. The oxalate and sulphuric acid treatment of sand are referred to.
