Abstract
634,330. Fuel supply to burners. AMERICAN BOSCH CORPORATION. July 11, 1947, No. 18443. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1946. [Class 75 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] Means for controlling the fuel and air supply of an internal-combustion devicei.e. a furnace, an internalcombustion engine, turbine or jet propulsion unit in which fuel is automatically controlled by a control member in the air supply passage, the flow of air through which is controlled by a throttle member separate from the control member, and the actuation of the control member is effected by and in accordance with the quantity of air passing through the air passage, comprises a fuel passage for the fuel separate from the air passage which feeds the fuel to an injection pump and a valve member in the fuel passage for controlling the passage of fuel through the fuel passage, the valve member being actuated by the control member in the air supply passage. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic view of apparatus for controlling the fuel and air supply of an internal-combustion engine. Fuel enters at 11 and passes by way of a valve 13, passage 9, valve 6, and passage 10 to an outlet 12 leading to an injection pump. The pressure difference across the valve 6 is maintained constant by the valve 13. A piston 18 balances the pressure difference across the valve 13 so that the resultant force on the shaft 19 of this valve is that due to the pressure difference across a diaphragm 15. The latter pressure difference is also the pressure difference across the valve 6 since on one side the diaphragm is acted on by pressure in the passage 9 and on the other side by the pressure in the passage 10 transmitted through a passage 10a. The valve 6 is operated by an unbalanced air valve 5 in an induction passage 3 (Fig. 6). The flow of air through the passage is regulated by a butterfly throttle valve 34. For obtaining an immediate increase in the fuel supplied during sudden opening of the throttle valve the valve shaft 21 has secured thereto (Fig. 7) an arm 32 which operates a piston 22 through a link 27. On sudden movement of the piston air is compressed in a chamber 20 and acting on a diaphragm 23 opens a valve 24, thus allowing fuel to flow from the inlet 11 to a passage 29 and then through a restriction 30 to the outlet 12. The air pressure is relieved by leakage of air past the piston 22. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement in which the fuel from the outlet 12 leads to a nozzle or spray bar instead of to an injection pump. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
