Abstract

633,496. Dish-washing machines. WATSON, F. (Aktiebolaget Elektrolux). April 28, 1947, No. 11318. [Class 138 (i)] In a dish-washing apparatus in which the articles are cleansed by jets of liquid, jet - producing means are provided comprising a nozzle for discharging a jet of liquid and jet-diverting devices arranged as to be impinged by the jet from the nozzle and movable transversely of the direction of the nozzle discharge. As shown in Fig. 1, two spraying devices 13 are mounted on members 14 on a cover 12 and base 11 of the machine. Each member 14 contains a water inlet channel 15 which is connected through pipes 16, 17 to a supply pipe 18, the pipe 16 having a hinged joint 19. A wire base 20 and a frame 21 for the crockery are mounted above the lower spraying device 13. A drain pipe 22 is provided at the base of the compartment. The spraying devices 13, Figs. 3 and 4, each comprise a jet head 26 rotatably mounted on the member 14 between a guide washer 28 and a guide screw 29 and having two jets 27 which are tangentially arranged with respect to, and fed from an annular channel 30 which is fed from the inlet channel 15 through a T-shaped channel 31. The action of the jets rotates the jet-head anticlockwise. Also mounted on the member 14 is an S-shaped jet-diverting device 23 which has two series of grooves 25 disposed tangentially to the annular bore 30 in the jet head 26 and which is rotated clockwise by the pressure of the jets on the grooves, the jets hitting each groove in turn. The grooves are semi-circular in section, they are parallel to each other and may be arranged with their longitudinal axis vertical, Fig. 6, or inclined. In the latter case the grooves on one half of the diverter 23 are arranged with the upper end inclined outwardly from the central axis of the diverter and those on the other half have their upper end inclined inwardly. Each groove is part circular in radial cross-section, adjacent grooves varying in length as shown in Fig. 3 so that the jets are diverted through different angles as shown in Fig. 8. In a modification, Fig. 10, a brake is provided to regulate the speed of rotation. This comprises two spring-loaded centrifugallyactuated weights 43, which press against a flange integral with a guide-screw which holds the jet head in place. The jet head is made in two parts held together by screws and with separate screw-in jet nozzles 47. Another form of brake, Fig. 12, comprises a gear pump mounted in a chamber in the jet diverter 23<SP>11</SP> and having two gear-wheels 51 driven by teeth 50 formed on the central member 14<SP>11</SP> and which is supplied with water through a channel from the washing chamber. The water is discharged through the clearance between the gear-wheels 51 and the chamber, the braking action being varied by altering the clearance. In another modification the jet diverter has three arms, one of these has vertical grooves, the grooves in the others being inclined as previously described. The jet head, Fig. 14, has three jets and is made in two parts 60, 61, bolted together and with screw-in nozzles; a spindle 64 is fixed to the upper part 60 and has a fixed collar 65 at its lower end which together with an annular flange 66 on the part 61 form a bearing for the jet head in the inlet channel 15. Water pressure will not displace the jet head since the pressure on collar 65 is equal to the pressure on ring 66. A bore is provided in spindle 64 to drain any leakage water from the underside of collar 65. The lower part 61 of the jet head carries a gear-wheel 68, Fig. 15, which by means of two gear-wheels 69 mounted on a bracket 70 rigid with the central member 14<SP>111</SP>, drives a ring-gear 71 which is connected to the casing 72 of a vane-type brake. The casing 72, which is eccentrically mounted relative to the axis of solution of the brake, is bolted to the jet diverter 23<SP>111</SP>, the brake controlling the speed of both the jet head and the diverter. The brake, Fig. 16, comprises the casing 72, six blades 75 slidably mounted for radial movement in a blade-holder 74 which is rigid with the central member 14<SP>111</SP>, and a cover 76 which has a cylindrical cam 80 formed on its inner surface concentrically with the casing 72, the cam keeping the blades 76 in contact with the casing wall. The brake is supplied from the washing chamber through a channel 77 and its tightness determines its speed of rotation. The jet head and/or the jet diverter may be motor-driven if desired, in which case the jets may be radially arranged. The relative movement between the jet head and the diverter may be obtained by different directions of movement as described and/or by different angular velocities of the two members.
