Abstract

Paper pulp is sized, e.g. in the beater with 1/4 to 4 per cent of rosin &c., and a small amount of a Diels-Alder condensation product obtained from an organic carboxylic acid, e.g. maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, maleinanilic or cinnamic acids or anhydrides reacted with a natural resin, e.g. rosin, a terpene, dipentene, terpinene, terpinolene or anthracene, or other substance which has in at least one tautomeric form a conjugated double bond. Rosin-maleic acid, alkali and water may be heated to 140 DEG to 200 DEG C., cooled, ground to powder, and a secondary dispersion for addition to the pulp may be formed by diluting with water and stirring at 10 DEG to 65 DEG C.
