Abstract
632,934. Internal shoe brakes. SOC. ANON. BENDIX. Aug. 29, 1946, Nos. 26034 and 26035. Convention dates, Jan. 14, 1943, and Sept. 14, 1943. [Class 103 (i)] An internal shoe brake comprises a pair of arcuate shoes, a support member having a central fixing flange disposed substantially in the median plane of the shoes, an actuator disposed between one pair of adjacent ends of the shoes and operatively engaging both shoes, and adjusting means associated with the other end of each shoe. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the brake shoe support comprises plates 6, 7, secured together by welding or riveting and provided with offset portions 10, 11 constituting a fork receiving the ends of the shoes 1 which are mounted on eccentric rings 14 carried by pins 3 extending through the fork, the pins being rotatable to adjust the shoes and locked after adjustment by nuts 16. The shoeactuating cylinder 12 is mounted on an offset portion of the plate 6, and a false backing-plate 32 in two parts, which forms a dust excluder, is supported from this plate. In a second form, Fig. 3, each shoe is formed with two webs 38, 39, and its lower end is mounted on eccentric rings 44, 45 carried by a pin 36 or 37 extending through reinforcing plates 49, 50 and a sleeve 41 secured to a central brake support 40, the shoe-actuating cylinder 42 being formed with lugs 43 for attachment to the support. A false backing-plate 60 is secured to a post 61 carried by the plate 50, and posts 62 carried by the lugs 43. Figs. 5 and 6 show a further form in which floating shoes 102, 104 are expanded by a hydraulic cylinder 106, and one shoe applies the other through an adjustable connection 108. The anchoring torque is taken by a central member comprising a plate 178 reinforced by a second plate 180 having an offset portion 184 carrying the cylinder 106 and a second offset portion formed with an elongated opening 186 through which extends a handle by which the connection 108. may be adjusted from outside the drum. The shoes anchor on adjustable stops formed by eccentric rings 200 carried by pins 188 extending through the plates 178, 180 and elongated holes 190 in the shoe webs, the pins being locked after adjustment by nuts and, if desired, by friction inserts. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9, the shoes anchor on a sleeve 230 mounted on an anchor-pin 198 extending through offset portions of plates 178, 180 constituting the central supporting member, and are applied by a cam 236 mounted on the pin 198 and formed integrally with a forked lever 238 operated by a control cable 240 in a sheath 242 welded to the supporting member. A false backing plate 246 is secured to lugs 244 on the supporting member. The shoes are positioned laterally by arms 250, 254 formed on the plate 180, and are held in contact with the arms 250 by torsion springs 252.
