Abstract
632,904. Thermal switches. FLIGHT, T. N., WILSON, W. H., and CHINN, A. J. Dec. 9, 1947, No. 32489. [Class 38 (v)] A thermostat embodying the switch disclosed in Specification 625,492 comprises an expansible brass tube 2 into which is screwed a nickel iron rod 3 adjustable by a knob 18 and having a collar 19 engaging points B,B<SP>1</SP> at the bottom of a recess in an insulating member 16. Clamped on posts 4,4<SP>1</SP> and separated by washers 5, 9 are a plate 6 supporting a magnet 11, a resilient lever 7 carrying a contact 14 and a twin armature unit 12, 13 and a fixed-contact carrying plate 8. The lever 7 is biassed to the closed position by arranging the armature 13 nearer to the magnet 11 than armature 12. On increase of temperature, the collar 19 moves down, causing the member 16 to pivot on the plate 8 about the point 20, whereby a pip 17 on the member 16 presses on the lever 7 and contacts 14, 15 separate with a snap-action. On cooling, the pressure on the lever 7 is relieved until its tension is overcome by the magnet and armature 13 and the contacts reclose. The position of the armatures 12, 13 relative to the magnet 11 is adjustable by the contact 15, and a screw 21 controls the contact gap.
