631,403. Determining physical qualities of materials. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and WISE, W. S. D. May 30, 1947, No. 14354. [Class 37] A polarograph for obtaining a continuous record of the oxygen content of a gaseous mixture comprises a dropping mercury electrode cell wherein the gas inlet 4 is introduced into the electrolyte 3 through a small orifice, to obtain fine dispersion of the gas, approximately level with the tip of the dropping mercury electrode 6 which is surrounded by a shield 10 of stainless steel wire gauze or a glass, asbestos or porcelain filter of fine mesh, extending below the tip of the electrode 6 to just above the level of the mercury pool anode 2, so that although the gas is quickly brought into solution the tip of the electrode 6 is shielded from disturbance in the electrolyte 3 sufficiently to avoid fluctuations in the diffusion current. The level of the mercury in the pool is maintained by means of an overflow pipe 12.
