631,177. Valve circuits. HATTE, P. L. M. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25725. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1944. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi)] A H.F. amplifier comprising a high Q resonant circuit is given an effective wideband characteristic by continuously varying the point of resonance on either side of the mid-band position at a very high frequency. The Figure shows the application to the I.F. amplifier of a superheterodyne receiver. The incoming signals at antenna 1 are amplified in stage 2 and converted to the intermediate frequency in stage 3 the resonant frequency of this stage being determined by the high Q circuit comprising inductor 5 tuned by capacitor 6 in parallel with the input capacities of valves 9 and 7. Valve 9 is an I.F. amplifier stage beyond which point the circuit of the receiver may be conventional. The input capacity of valve 7 is varied continuously and very rapidly over a range by varying the suppressor grid potential by oscillator 12 so that the resonant point of the I.F. amplifier is rapidly varied over a considerable frequency range and the amplifier is thus given an effective wide-band characteristic, the band width of which may be varied by adjustment of the output amplitude of oscillator 12. An H.F. amplifier of this type may be used in a super-regenerative receiver in conjunction with a, number of normal amplifying stages the receiver tending to oscillate when the resonant frequency of the controlled stage passes through the resonant frequency which is common to the other stages. A wideband amplifier of this type may also be used for H.F. amplification in a television transmitter.
