Abstract
628,567. Casings, enclosures and mountings for resistances ; non-metal resistances temperature variable resistances. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. July 26, 1946, No. 22323. Convention date, July 30, 1945. [Class 37] A resistor which has a negative temperature coefficient and comprises a resistive body of substantially cylindrical shape housed in a tube of insulating material and connected by filiform conductors to terminals at the ends of the tube is characterized in that the resistive body is supported inside the tube by spacers which have a small area of contact either with the resistive body or with the inner wall of the tube. As shown a ceramic tube 1 is formed with three ribs which embrace a rod-shaped resistance element 5 supported axially by helical springs 9 bearing against end caps 3. The wire of the helical springs 9 is of the nature of a thread and the ribs 7 blade-shaped, Fig. 2. The ribs 7 may alternatively be formed on the rod resistance 5. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the ribs 7 are omitted and the resistance 5 is supported instead by triangular plates which make a three-point contact with the inner wall of the tube 1. The resistance 5 may be a mixture of manganese oxide and titanium oxide. The invention is directed particularly to radio resistances.
