Abstract
628,418. Doffing ring spinning and twisting machines. SCRIVEN, F. W. A. June 5, 1946, No. 17088. [Class 120 (ii)] A ring spinning or twisting machine has three rows of vertically reciprocable spindles, the first row consisting of the rotary spindles 21 on which the yarn is spun, the second row consisting of short non-rotary spindles 22 to receive full spools during doffing operations and the third row holding empty spools 24. The machine also has gripping means 25 to hold each full and empty spool separately against vertical movement whilst removing and placing on spindles. To commence doffing, and while the machine is still running, the lifter rail 54, Fig. 2, is lowered until some of the yarn 57 is being wound onto the bottom of the spool 65. The lifter rail 54 and spindle rail 58 are then simultaneously lowered a distance slightly greater than the length of the spindle 21 above the wharl 60. The spinning or twisting is then stopped, whereupon the rails 54, 58 are raised into their former positions, the downward and upward movements resulting in the formation of a length of slack yarn which is held clear of the spool 65 by a zig-zag yarn clearer 63, until grippers 25 have been moved forward to grip the spool 65. The grippers comprise a pair of arcuate jaws 31, 32, Fig. 4, having legs 34, 35 pivoted at 33 on a bar 26 and acted upon by levers 36, 37 attached to a short bar 38 slidable on a horizontal spindle 40 by a sliding bar 441 to open the jaws 31, 32 and operable in the opposite direction to close the jaws by a compression spring 43. The sliding bar 441 is actuated through a system of levers 48, 50, 51, Fig. 2, by a hand-lever 53 located at one end of the machine. When the spool 65 has been gripped, the lifter and spindle rails 54, 58 are again lowered leaving the spool suspended in the grippers 25. As the spindle 21 is withdrawn, part of the yarn wrapped round the bottom of the spool 65 winds round the spindle. The grippers 25 are moved forward to position the spool 65 above a spindle of the row of stationary spindles 22, which, in conjunction with the row of spindles 23 holding empty spools 24, is then raised and the grippers 25 are opened, leaving the spool 65 on a spindle of row 22. The grippers 25 are moved farther forward to grip an empty spool 24, the rows of spindles 22, 23 are lowered, the grippers 25 are moved back so that the spool 24 is held above the spindle 21, the lifter and spindle rails 54, 58 are raised so that the spindle 21 enters the bore of the spool 24 and traps the yarn which was wrapped round the spindle 21, the yam is severed by cutting edges 70 on the lifter rail 54, and spinning is restarted. It is stated that the mechanism for vertically reciprocating the spindle rail may be used for packing a large quantity of yarn onto the spool.
