Abstract

628,267. Rotary cylindrical valves. HETHERINGTON, J., LANCHESTER, G. H., and STERLING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30826. [Class 135] A multiple-way rotary cylindrical valve for controlling the operations of fluid-pressure or vacuum-operated apparatus in a continuous, interrupted or reversible sequence comprises a valve member with peripheral grooves such as 31, and radial ports such as 32, 37, communicating with an axial exhaust passage, and a valve housing having a longitudinal pressure or vacuum duct 18 supplying a longitudinal series of ports 17 and also having further longitudinally-arranged ports 19 ... 27. The valve member shown has a number of separate elements 7 ... 11 surrounding a hollow shaft 6 and pinned to one another and disc 4 by dowels 12. Packing rings 14, 29 are arranged between the elements at their inner and outer peripheries. The disc 4 is integral with a shaft 3 carrying a hand wheel 1 and a pointer 2 and having a rearward extension 5 spigoted into the shaft 6 so as to rotate the latter. The valve housing has one end-plate 15 formed as an indicator dial and the other 28 provided with a connection 28a to an exhaust line. The port 19 is connected to a hydraulic pump and the other ports 20-27 are connected in pairs 20, 21; 22, 23; 24, 25; and 26, 27 to the various jacks or jiggers of a mobile well-drilling apparatus as described in Specification 628,266. In one position of the hand wheel 1, a ratchet tooth 43, Fig. 4, on the disc 4, passes a spring-pressed detent 41 preventing reverse operation of the valve and therefore repetition of the preceding operations until the cycle has been completed in the forward direction. Similar means may be provided for preventing reverse movement in one or more of the other positions of the valve. To enable the final derrick-lowering operation to be made at a controlled rate, the appropriate radial port 44 leading to the exhaust passage is adjustably throttled by a recessed plug 45 having a threaded head 46 in a threaded bore 47. The plug is locked in position by a hollow grub-screw 48, both being accessible through holes 49, 50 when these are coincident. The hole 50 is sealed by a grubscrew and a lead plug.
