Abstract
626,758. Feeding webs. ROEN, G. March 19, 1947, No. 7620. Convention date, March 23, 1946. [Class 100 (i)] In a winding machine for winding paper sheets unwound from a supply roll on a rotating spindle which carries the roll during its rotation, the drive of the spindle is disconnected automatically dependant on the quantity of paper rewound, the spindle is withdrawn axially from the rewound roll which is then received on a displacing means and the end of the web is cut by a movable member which engages the web between the roll and spindle to move the web into contact with the spindle for a new rewinding operation. A paper web 30 is wound on a spindle 6 from a supply roll 29 over guide rollers 3, 4, 5; the spindle 6 is driven intermittently by a motor 7 through a clutch 8, pulleys 12, 13 and 14, belt 11 and a further clutch 51, 51<SP>1</SP>. When each roll is complete the spindle 6 is moved axially by a piston 46 within a cylinder 45. The piston 46 is moved by a control valve 41 operated by compressed air or fluid. The control valve 41 is actuated by a lever 39 moved by an electromagnet 35 operated by a switch 31 which is moved to operative position when the roll reaches a predetermined diameter. The completed roll 29 drops on to supporting rollers 55 and 56 causing a lever 59 to move downwards so that a cam roller 66 engages a cam 67 and a further cam 62 on the lever 59 operates a switch 69 which through a magnet 80 closes a clutch 85 to drive a cam-shaft 68 through a worm gear 86 driven by pulleys 8 and 87. An electromagnet 35 connected in parallel with an electromagnet 34 actuates a brake lever 26 and band 25 through a wire 36 to brake the supply roll 29. The spindle 6 is returned to its initial position by actuation of the plunger 40 of the control device to the left by a spring 38. A cam 93 on the cam-shaft 68 engages a roller 94 and causes movement of levers 98-99 from the position shown in Fig. 1 towards the spindle 6. Levers 98-99 are connected by a slotted tube 100 which during the movement inwards will push the web 30 inwards to form a loop which partially encloses the spindle 6 and also presses the web against the knife 102 to cut the web; rubber rollers 113 and 114 carried by the levers 98-99 hold the web resiliently against the spindle 6. A glue roller 103 is driven from the cam-shaft 68 to apply glue to the extremity of the roll 28 which then rolls down the table 104 while the extremity is glued to the surface of the roll. The spindle 6 is then rotated slowly and the sequence of operations repeated. Instead of one winding spindle, two spindles may be supported coaxially opposite each other.
