Abstract

626,587. Winding yams &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and BROWN, J. I. July 22, 1947, No. 19582. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] A yarn &c. coning machine comprises a positively driven spindle for carrying the cone being wound together with a thread guide riding against the surface of the cone, the arrangement being such that movement of the thread guide away from the spindle, due to the growth of the cone, results in a sideways displacement of the'spindle and an alteration in the rotational speed thereof so that yarn is wound on to the cone at a substantially constant peripheral speed. The tube 1 is held on the mandrel 5 by spring-urged jaws 8 which, to release the tube, may be drawn inwardly by a forked plunger 6, 7 operated against a spring 12. The mandrel 5 is rotated by the spindle 2 driven through friction gears 14, 15, the gear 14 carrying a resilient ring 16 and the plate 15 driving the spindle through a yoke 19, forming, with a ring 20, a magnetic eddy-current coupling so that speed changes are effected without snatching.- The thread guide consists of a grooved conical roller 3 freely mounted on a spindle attached to a counterweighted arm 41 pivoting about a shaft 42. As the cone grows in diameter it moves the guide roller 3 about the shaft 42 until a micro-switch is contacted to energise a solenoid 47 and retract a pawl 48 from a ratchet 51 to allow the spindle-carrying carriage 23 to slide along guide rails 24, 24<SP>1</SP> under pressure from the thread guide roller. As the microswitch is released by the swing back of the arm 42, the pawl 48 drops under the action of the spring 50 to engage the next tooth in the ratchet 51. The movement of the spindle 2 and carriage 23 effects the drifting of the driven friction wheel 15 in relation to the driving wheel 14 so to reduce the spindle speed to maintain a constant winding speed. At the end of the wind, the carriage 23 contacts a switch to energise a solenoid 31 to withdraw the friction wheel 15 from engagement with the driving wheel 14. To facilitate the tending of the machine, empty and full cones may be supplied to and removed from the machine by a conveyer belt and the operator may be provided with a swivel seat on a wheeled carriage running on rails between two machines and operated by foot pedals. Specification 600,713 is referred to.
