625,955. Dental handpieces. BJORKLUND, G. E, March 19, 1947, No. 7571. Convention date, March 20, 1946. [Class 81(ii)] A dental handpiece of the type in which the tool is held in a chuck sleeve disposed at an angle to the driving shaft, the chuck sleeve being driven from the driving shaft through a gear on the sleeve located between bearings carrying the sleeve, is characterized in that the bearing between the gear and the tool point is adapted to take axial thrust whilst the bearing at the other end of the sleeve serves solely to take radial thrust. A gear casing 3 carries a split bush 11 which acts as an axial and radial bearing for chuck sleeve 7. A flanged portion of the bush cooperates with a flanged portion of the chuck sleeve 7, an axial thrust bearing thus being formed and the flange 12 also serving as a thrower ring for swarf &c.. The upper end of the chuck sleeve is journalled in a sleeve 10 which acts as a radial thrust bearing and may be made of bronze or similar bearing metal. Specification 625,954 is referred to.
