Abstract

Carbon black for use in rubber compounding is rendered substantially dustless by mixing a dispersion of rubber in aqueous medium or a solution of rubber in non-aqueous medium with a dispersion of carbon black in an aqueous or non-aqueous medium in such manner as to cause mutual precipitation or flocculation of the rubber and carbon black particles simultaneously to produce a slurry which can be readily filtered or centrifuged and dried, the rubber being incorporated in the proportion of from 5 - 40 parts of rubber to 100 parts of carbon black by weight. The black is preferably dispersed in an alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or methyl cyclohexanone together with an anionic or cationic soap or cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The rubber may be dissolved in petrol, naphtha benzene, or carbon tetrachloride or used in latex form. Dispersions of oils, fats, waxes or fatty acids may also be added.
