Abstract
625,671. Lathes. PINES ENGINEERING CO. May 1, 1946, No. 13144. Convention date, May 28, 1945. [Class 83 (iii)] Work-holders.-A work feeding and holding device for a stationary work type of lathe adapted to operate on the ends of a tube or rod by rotary cutting heads, comprises guide members along which the work-pieces are moved to operating position and pivoted clamping members which close upon a positioned workpiece and which move below the guide members during a change of work-piece, means for closing the clamping members comprising cam faces on the outer surfaces thereof engaged by upwardly-acting rollers. Tubes or similar workpieces 16, Fig. 2, are fed down a delivery shoot 36 and drop into the recesses formed by a pair of feed discs 22, 23, Fig. 1, which are rotated intermittently by a pawl 31 and ratchet-wheel 27. The pawl is reciprocated at intervals by a hydraulic piston device 34, 35 and the feed discs thus transfer the workpieces around to the lowermost position where an end-working operation by rotating cutting-heads 14, 15 is performed. A pair of guides 44, 45 retain the work-pieces within the carriers as they are rotated, and these guides are vertically adjustable by a cam member 50, Fig. 3, for differently sized work-pieces, so that these are held at the correct height for engagement by clamping members during the working operation. The clamping members comprise jaws 55, 56, Fig. 2, pivoted at their lower ends about a spindle 57. Closure is effected through rollers 62, 63 on the ends of bell-crank levers engaging hardened inclined wedge-pieces 60, 61 respectively, provided on the jaws. The bell-cranks are connected up by parallel linkage to the pistonrod of a hydraulic operating device 81-84. In the open position the jaws drop down to a position below the top edges of the guide members 44, 45 so that they do not interfere with the feeding of a fresh work-piece into the operating position. In an alternative actuating arrangement for the clamping jaws the linkage is replaced by a hydraulically-moved vertical cross-head carrying the operating rollers.
