Abstract

625,590. Pulse generating circuits. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FERGUSON, J. M., and RYDER, D. H. Feb. 10, 1947, No. 3887. [Class 40 (vi)] In a pulse generator of the Marx type in which a number of capacitors are charged in parallel through resistors and/or inductors from a D.C. source and are then connected in series to discharge through gas-discharge tubes means are provided to trigger these tubes approximately simultaneously. The Figure shows capacitors 10a-10f connected in parallel via resistors 11a-11f and 12a-12e to charge across the D.C. supply 16. When a triggering pulse is applied to terminal 18 the ignitrons 14a-14f are rendered conducting to discharge the capacitors 10a-10f in series, the output pulse at terminal 26 being applied to the load 20. The ignitrons may be of the sealedoff mercury vapour type. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the triggering electrodes of the ignitrons are all resistively coupled to the firing terminal. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the triggering electrodes of the ignitrons nearer to the earth potential end of the generator are resistively coupled to the firing terminal the remainder having their triggering electrodes capacitively coupled each to its own anode terminal. These latter tubes are rendered conducting by the triggering electrode, being driven positive with respect to cathode due to the rapid increase of voltage across each of these latter tubes when the earlier ones are fired.
