625,247. Digging or trenching machines. HOLT, G: G., and ENGLISH, A. P. Nov. 16, 1943, No. 19094. [Class 6(i)] [Also in Group XXI] A digging or trenching machine propelled by an engine 42 and guided by transversely-adjustable handles 22 has two running wheels, rollers or endless tracks 14, driven by the engine through reduction gearing 30 and clutch 27, and upper and lower guide rollers 39., 67 for an endless digging conveyer, the upper roller being driven from the engine through reduction gear 44, 45 so as to rotate in opposite direction to the running wheels and at a greater linear speed. Further, scoop-like digging implements 79 are provided on the conveyer to return the excavated earth to the rear of the machine where a rotary brush 52 discharges it through chute 84 and sieve 85 either back to the same trench or laterally to an adjacent trench previously dug. The conveyer frame comprises side plates 57 which can be extended by adjusting devices 63, and rear plates 72 hinged at 73 to the main plates so as to yield against spring-devices. The bottom roller supports 67 of the conveyer have helical grooves of opposite hand to feed to the sides earth which, falls through the conveyer. The conveyer belt comprises digging implements 79, Fig. 8, of plough-share form arranged in chevron formation on bars 54 which are linked together chain fashion by pins passing through interengaging sleeves 55, 56. Steermay be effected by differential control of the wheels &c. 14.
