Abstract

624,753. Shackles. CALDWELL, L. M. May 9, 1947, No. 12570. Convention date, June 15, 1942. [Class 24] [Also in Group XXX] A self-adjusting sling comprises. a load-carrying saddle supporting a length of rope forming loops on opposite sides of the saddle for suspension of the load, the rope being slidable lengthwise on the saddle to permit adjustment of the loops for uniform and stable suspension of the load and a rope clamping member loosely mounted on top of the saddle to ride on and resist sliding movement of the rope relative to the saddle, when the sling has adjusted itself and is carrying the load, and having the ends of the rope attached to it. In the embodiment shown the rope 16 has loops 12, 13, 14, 15 fitted with travelling beckets 17 provided with hooks 18 for attachment to the load 11. The central parts 19, 20, 21, of the rope are slidably supported in grooves 23 of a saddle 22 to which is connected a hanger bolt 29 for engaging a crane hook 9. The hanger bolt passes through holes 30 in the member 22 and has large nuts 31 on the ends locked by pins 311. A clamp 24 having side flanges 33, sliding into grooves 34 in the saddle 22, has hooks 25, 26, for securing. the ends of the rope ends. Adjustment of the four loops takes place during initial lifting until the load is partly taken by the clamp which causes the clamp to be depressed onto the rope and the clamp thus acts as a brake. In an arrangement described with two loops, the rope is wound twice right round the member 22 which is cylindrical and is fitted with a yoke at the lower end to keep the rope in position.
