624,706. Impedance measurements. STAN. DARD TELEPHONES &. CABLES, Ltd. July 13, 1946, No. 21015. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1945. [Class 37] To measure the length of a transmission line 1, Fig. 1, a tunable impedance 2 is connected across the input and the assembly fed with H.F. oscillations from a generator 5, a null indicator 7 indicating when lines 1, 2 are in parallel resonance; the displacement of the bar 3 from a quarter wavelength position is a direct measure of the length of line 1. As applied to an open-ended coaxial line, the generator 15, Fig. 2, feeds the line 11 and an adjustable short 12, and a null indicator 17 is connected to a line 16 an odd number of quarter wave. lengths long connected to the inputs of lines 11, 12 to show when line 12 has been adjusted to parallel resonance with line 11. When.thelines under test are short-circuited at their outer ends, the indicators 7, 17 are connected over lines an even number of quarter wavelengths long.
