Abstract
624,656. Rotary-absorption dynamometers. HARTRIDGE, L. Dec. 31, 1946, No. 38158. [Class 106 (ii)] An absorption dynamometer having a closable friction band or the like associated with a driven brake drum comprises a pivoted lever, a push-pull connection between the band or the like and the lever, an axially slidable rod associated with indicating means and a pushpull connection between the lever and the rod such that movements of the lever due to partial rotary movements of the band or the like move the rod axially, a spring to resist movement of the lever in one sense, a spring to resist movement of the lever in the opposite sense and a counterweight adapted normally to hold the ever in a stable position. The machine under test is mounted on a beam 8 and drives a shaft 1 either directly or through gearing, the shaft carrying the brake drum around which the friction band 4 is located by guides 7. The friction band may be closed by rotating a vertically-rockable rod 10 having a universal joint 16 and controlling cams 12 in engagement with the end lugs of the friction band. Any tendency of the band to rotate rocks a pair of counterweighted levers 19a about a pivot 20 by means of a link 18, the levers being loaded by one of a pair of springs 31 while the other spring slides through an aperture in its guide 29. An extension of one of the levers 19a operates an indicating pointer 30 by means of a link 26 and a slidable rod 28, multiple and/or interchangeable scales being provided. An electrical switch 35 may be secured to the rod 10 controlling the friction band and be connected to switch on an electrical motor under test at the required moment.
