Abstract
623,005. Moulding filler elements for use in reaction towers &c. SOLVAY & CIE. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28774. Convention date. March 5, 1941. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XII and XIII] Filler elements for use in reaction towers and the like (see Groups XII and XIII) which are of U, Y, H or other prismatic section, are slightly curved in the direction of their length and made of material in a state of fusion, in super-saturated solution or suspension, are manufactured by extracting the material from a hot bath f by means of a rotary drum d having peripheral grooves e, the material solidifying along the walls of the grooves to produce curved strips which are divided into sections of the desired length by a scraper k which detaches them from the drum and breaks them against a cylindrical stop device i. A heated scraper g may be used to remove excess material from the grooves. The elements may also be made from materials which can be worked in a pasty condition, such as certain refractory materials, in which case they are formed by extrusion through a die, the sections issuing from the die being supported in such a manner as to become curved before being sectioned.
