622,609. Electric locomotives. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. April 1, 1947, No. 8819. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1946. [Class 79 (iii)] In an electric locomotive the whole apparatus controlling the traction and auxiliary circuits constitute a unitary and detachable structure enclosed in a chest, provided with inspection doors. The coupling, starting and shunting contactors are preferably cam operated. The structure may be provided with resistance cooling fans, the operating motors of which being fed from the earthed side of a traction motor and form part of the starting circuit of the locomotive being short circuited on completion of the starting operation. The unit 1 comprises resistance, coupling and shunting contactors 14, 16, 18 with their operating motors 15, 17, 19, respectively auxiliary relays 20, reverser 21, resistances 22 and a high tension cell 9 containing the main circuit breaker 12, current being collected through pantographs. The motors 15, 17, may be outside the unit 1 to facilitate manual, operation of the contactors from the drivers stands, if necessary. The resistances 22 are cooled by helical fans 27 drawing in air at a grating 24 and expelling it through a cowl 25 having shutters 26, the fans 27 being cooled by air drawn in at another cowl 28. In a modification air is drawn in by the fans 27 through the cowl 25 and expelled through the grating 24 shutting the cowl 28. In a further modification the cowl 25 is replaced by side louvres. The whole or a part of the unit 1 can be withdrawn vertically and parts of the units can be withdrawn horizontally. A cut-out switch can isolate a damaged fan motor.
