Abstract

622,418. Bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 21, 1947, No. 7768. Convention date, March 21, 1946. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In an anti-friction bearing, a seal between the inner and outer race rings 12, 14 comprises an annular shield 18 whose outer edge is folded over to form a rim which fits in a groove 25 in the member 14 and which grips a sealing washer 16 so as to deflect it axially inwardly. The inner edge of the washer 16 engages a shoulder 20 of a groove 22 in the race ring 12 in light wiping contact. During rotation of the inner race ring, a narrow angular land 23 acts as a slinger and keeps dirt and other matter out of the groove 22. In assembly the washer 16 is fitted in the groove 32, Fig. 2, and a plunger 36 then forced against the frusto-conical portion 34 to deform the shield and tightly clamp the outer edge of the sealing washer in the shield rim. Holes 51 in the shield 18 are provided to facilitate lubrication by needle injection. In one modification there is no annular land 23 and in a further modification the internal diameter of the shield 18 is of such a diameter relative to the inner race member as to allow the insertion of a lubricant needle.
