Abstract

A composition suitable for application to a surface by spraying comprises a mixture of from 5 to 8 volumes (dry) of exfoliated vermiculite and from 1.2 to 3 volumes of lime, chalk, whiting, china clay, lithopone or barytes, or a combination of two or more of them, a preferred material being the lime residue obtained in the manufacture of acetylene. Preferably from 1 to 3.5 volumes of cement, preferably Portland cement, is incorporated, and this may be wholly or partly replaced by a hardener such as those known under the Registered Trade Marks "Sika" and "Tretol." The mix may also include a foaming agent such as hydrogen peroxide or aluminium powder to produce a cellular coating. The composition may be applied by forming it into an aqueous slurry with about 3 volumes of water, spraying to give a coating of the required thickness, and smoothing the surface of the coating whilst simultaneously subjecting it to vibration, preferably by using the vibrated screed described in Specification 622,244, [Group II]. Specification 614,582, [Group X], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
