Abstract
622,215. Electrolytic treatment of magnesium. STEVENS, A. H. (Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation). March 5, 1946, No. 6781. [Class 41] A process of forming a protective coating on magnesium, magnesium alloys or articles formed of such materials, comprises electrolytically treating them in an electrolyte containing 0.05 to 10 per cent by weight of phenol, which retards the formation of gases and enters into the coating. The preferred electrolyte contains 22 to 25 per cent by weight of sodium hydroxide, 0.2 to 0.3 per cent by weight of phenol, and 2 to 3 per cent by volume of sodium silicates. The articles may be cleaned by being subjected to a degreasing treatment immersed in an aqueous alkaline solution rinsed, immersed in an acid bath, preferably charged with chromic acid and calcium nitrate, and rinsed in hot water. The articles may also be cleaned electrolytically using direct current. For the protective coating alternating or direct current may be used, after which the articles are rinsed in cold water, then in boiling water and then in chromic acid solution. They are then dried in hot air and dipped in a sealing liquid consisting of zinc chromate primer.
