Abstract

Refractory articles such as moulds and cores for casting metals, tubes, crucibles and furnace linings are made from a refractory aggregate, e.g. powdered silica or sillimanite, and a liquid binder comprising a chloro-alkyl silicate, more than an equimolecular amount of water, and an agent which promotes hydrolysis and polymerization, e.g. piperidine or one of those referred to in Specification 612,622. The manufacture is carried out as described in Specification 575,734. In examples, refractory articles were cast from a slurry consisting of tetrachloroethyl silicate containing 0.5, 1 or 2 per cent of piperidine, aqueous alcohol and sillimanite. After setting, the articles were air dried and then fired. The Provisional Specification refers also to Specification 621,737, [Group III].
