Abstract
621,547. Axial-flow compressors. DAVIS, C. A., BILL, J. H., and MORLEY, F. W. W. Feb. 17, 1947, No. 4603. [Classes 110(i) and 110(iii)] A stator blade for an axial-flow compressor is formed at its root end with an axially and circumferentially extending platform, the latter being formed at its axially-spaced edges with a pair of surfaces facing towards and curved about the axis of the casing and intermediate said edges with an outwardly facing similarly curved surface the axial dimension of which is less than that of the platform; these surfaces form abutments for the retention of the blade in a circumferential groove in the casing. Each blade 12 comprises a platform 13 and a rib 23 which engage with flanges 17 and a web 16 formed on the inner wall of the casing. The engaging surfaces 18, 19 are curved about the casing axis. Each stage comprises an odd number of blades, which are assembled into the casing so that there is one more blade in the lower part 10 of the casing than in the upper part 11. The number of blades in each stage increases from stage to stage, so that the chord of the blade platforms decreases from stage to stage. The casing is split along a plane which is slightly inclined to a diamentral plane and is displaced therefrom by an amount which is substantially equal to the amount by which the blade platforms in the lower casing part 10 project beyond the diamentral plane. The blades are retained in each casing part 10, 11 by washers 25 which lie iri recesses 26 and engage recessed edges 30 of the platforms of the end blades. The clearance space between the blades and the casing wall may be used to effect tappings at appropriate stages, to avoid surging or for extracting cooling air. Each blade platform may have a pair of ribs 23 co-operating with a pair of webs 16. Specification 621,544 is referred to.
