Abstract
Esters of monomethylene ethers of 2-keto-l-gulonic acid are made by heating a bismethylene ether of 2-keto-l-gulonic acid or a salt thereof with an alcohol in the presence of an esterifying catalyst in a quantity less than 1 per cent of the alcohol, excluding any required for neutralization, when a salt is employed as starting material, and simultaneously removing the moisture present, the hydration water, and the carbonyl compound liberated by azeotropic distillation. An auxiliary liquid such as hexane, benzene, toluene, cyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene, and dichlorethane may be employed. Alcohols specified are ethanol, glycol, propanols, allyl alcohol, butanols, and esterifying catalysts specified are hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids, benzene and naphthalene sulphonic acids, and pyridine. When salts of bismethylene ethers of 2-keto-l-gulonic acid are employed, enough acid is present to neutralize the base liberated, and as bis-methylene ethers the compounds of 2-keto-l-gulonic acid with acetone, methylethylketone, cyclohexanone, or benzaldehyde are specified. Reduced or atmospheric pressure may be employed, and the process may be carried out continuously. The products may be converted to ascorbic acid by heating in an acid medium. Examples describe the reaction of diacetoneketogulonic acid with (1) ethanol, and (2) butanol, in presence of benzene and sulphuric acid, and also (3) the reaction of diacetoneketogulonic acid sodium salt with ethanol in presence of hydrochloric acid and benzene.
