621,011. Electromagnets. ENGLISH ELEC. TRIC CO., Ltd., HASSELL, S., and ROBINSON, A. A. Feb. 10, 1947, No. 3889. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electromagnet, e.g. for relays, comprises a permanent or electromagnet 10 with an annular air gap, in which is situated an operating coil 13, and an armature 14 capable of bridging the air gap when drawn into its attracted position by a pulse of current in the operating coil and of being released when a pulse of reverse polarity is applied to the operating coil. As shown, the disc-shaped armature 14 is held in a stable position against a non-magnetic abutment 17 by a spring 15 which is overcome when a pulse of current in the coil 13 diverts the magnet's flux towards the armature. The armature then moves towards the magnet and takes up a second stable position against the pole faces. A pulse of current in the reverse direction deflects the flux away from the armature and so releases it and allows it to take up its original position. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a pair of oppositely-disposed alternately-acting electromagnets act on a single armature and in further modifications, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), extending flanges are used on either of the circular poles to decrease the operating current. The coil 13 may be carried on the armature.
