Abstract
A mixture suitable for use as a rubber antioxidant (see Group V) comprising a bis-(2-hydroxy-3 : 5-dimethylphenyl) alkyl methane which is described in Specification 525,737 and the corresponding bis-(4-hydroxy-2 : 5-dimethylphenyl) alkylmethane is made by condensing a mixture of 50-80 per cent of 2 : 4-dimethylphenol and 50-20 per cent of 2 : 5-dimethylphenol, which is readily obtained from coal tar fractions, with an aliphatic aldehyde containing not more than 7 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid condensing agent such as hydrochloric acid. Specified mixtures are those obtained when the aldehyde is n-butyraldehyde, iso-butyraldehyde and n-propionaldehyde.ALSO:Rubber is preserved by means of a mixture of antioxidants comprising a bis-(2-hydroxy-3:5 dimethylphenyl) alkylmethane which is described in Specification 525,737 and the corresponding bis-(4-hydroxy-2:5 dimethylphenyl) alkylmethane. The antioxidant mixture may be obtained by condensing a mixture of 50 - 80 per cent of 2:4 dimethylphenyl and 50 - 20 per cent of 2:5 dimethylphenol which is readily obtained from coal tar fractions with an aliphatic aldehyde containing not more than 7 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid condensing agent such as hydrochloric acid. Specified antioxidant mixtures are those obtained when the aldehyde is n. butyraldehyde, iso-butyraldehyde and n. propionaldehyde. The mixtures are preferably compounded with pale crepe rubber, zinc oxide, blanc fixe, stearic acid, titenium dioxide, sulphur and zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, and then cured to give a lightly coloured product.
