Abstract

619,674. Resin-bonded fibrous laminates. THURSTON, A. P. (Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation). July 25, 1945, No. 19043. [Class 140] A laminated product is made by arranging glass fibres in parallelism and lateral contact to form a thir web, impregnating the web with ar incompletely cured thermosetting resin to fill all voids between the fibres, superposing a plurality of such webs and completing the cure. Apparatus for making the web comprises Fig. 1, a bushing 12 provided with small orifices through which molter glass flows. The fibres are collectec into a strand by a guide 18 and wounc on a drum 14. Preferably relative movement is established between the drum and bushing parallel with the axis of rotation of the drum. Simultaneously the resin, which may be in solution or in a heated tacky state is sprayed or brushed on to the fibres The web is then cut along a line extending lengthwise of the drum and rolled into a plane sheet. In a modification, Fig. 4, molten glass from a bushing 26 streams through a blower 27 which ejects a blast of gas engaging and attentuating the streams into fine fibres 28. These are built up on a drum 29 into a thin web 31 in which the fibres extend haphazardly. This web is drawn out to form a sliver 32 of interiaced parallel fibres which is wound on to a second drum 33 and treated as above. For large sheets, the apparatus of Fig. 7 may be employed in which continuous glass fibres or slivers of staple glass fibres are drawn from warper beams 41 when the warps combine and pass about a cylinder 46 submerged in a bath 47 of resin and through a drying chamber 51. In laminating, two or more of the impregnated sheets, which may be further treated with resin or solvent, are superposed, preferably in different directions, and subjected to heat and pressure. Phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins are specified. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 449,223. 563,043, 564,352 and 569,663.
