Abstract
619,184. Contacting gases with liquids. MOREL, S. Nov. 25, 1946, No. 34936. Convention date Nov. 30, 1945. [Class 55 (ii)] A wet filter for air and other gases comprises a vessel 1 with an inlet 12 and an outlet 13 and which contains a hollow drum formed by sheets of perforated metal or gauze wound into superposed spirals such as a, b, c between two parallel plates 19 and 20 mounted on a horizontal rotary shaft 14, the vessel being partly filled with water or other liquid. The sheets form between them a number of double walls opening into the free space inside the drum and on the outer surface of the drum and are of such length that one opening is above and one below the level of the water in the vessel. The spirals are wound on the cylindrical flanges 23 and 24, Fig. 2, and are separated by strips of packing 33 and the inner chamber 37 of the drum is connected to the inlet 12 by a rubber or leather sleeve 28. The fabric of the sheets of gauze may be roughened by sand blasting to increase the effective surface area of the gauze and two or more of the filters may be used in series or in parallel. The shaft 14 may be rotated by any suitable means and in operation the apparatus tends to produce a slight vacuum at the inlet 12. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the drum is replaceable by a series of circular discs of gauze carried on a rotating shaft and also by a number of rectangular sheets adapted for reciprocation in a vertical direction, the sheets being alternately dipped in the liquid and placed in the path of the gaseous fluid to be filtered. In a further modification the circular discs above could be helically turned. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
