Abstract
A surgical dressing comprises an alginate salt formed into a coherent body and treated with penicillin. In one example filaments are drawn out from a viscous mass composed of an alginate salt, such as sodium or calcium alginate, and immersed in a bath containing penicillin, a coagulating substance such as tissue extract or calcium salt, chlorocresol and sulphathiazol. The filaments may be woven or spun to form a coherent body of the required size and strength. An antiseptic compound such as acridine derivative or ensol may be added to the solution.
