Abstract

Solvent such as carbon tetrachloride is removed from chlorinated paraffin wax by vaporizing the solvent while maintaining the wax in a molten condition and in the form of a film on a heated surface. The process may be carried out by allowing the molten wax to flow down a flat, electrically-heated, aluminium trough, the time of contact and the thickness of the film being controlled by varying the slope of the trough. An inert gaseous fluid, such as air, may be passed continuously over the film. In an example, a 40 per cent solution of a 70 per cent chlorinated paraffin wax in carbon tetrachloride was fed, at a constant rate of 600 ml./hr., to an aluminium trough, 4 feet long and 1 1/2 inches wide, which was uniformly heated electrically. By means of an energy regulator the temperature of the trough was maintained at 180 DEG C. and the slope was so arranged that the time of contact was 5 minutes. The wax collected at the lower end of the trough contained 2.4 per cent carbon tetrachloride.
