Abstract

Derivatives of 5-aminouracil of the general formula <FORM:0618826/IV(b)/1> where R is an acyl radical derived from an a -fluoro-, a -chloro-, a -bromo-, a -hydroxy- or dicarboxylic aliphatic acid having up to six carbon atoms, are prepared by heating 5-aminouracil with the appropriate aliphatic carboxylic acid. In place of 5-aminouracil, a derivative which is hydrolysed to 5-aminouracil by water may be used. Preferably the reactants are heated at 100-140 DEG C. for 1/2 -2 hours and the acid is one having a dissociation constant greater than 10-5. The products are useful as inhibitors of the growth of rinuses and bacteria. In examples, 5-aminouracil or a derivative is heated with the appropriate acid to produce 5-(chloroacetamino)-uracil, 5-(a -chloropropionylamino)-uracil, 5-dichloroacetylamino(-uracil, 5-(fluoroacetylamino)-uracil, 5-(a - chlorobutyrylamino) - uracil, 5 - (a - bromopropionylamino) - uracil, 5 - (dibromoacetylamino) - uracil, 5 - oxalylamino) - uracil, 5-lactylaminouracil and 5-adipylaminouracil.
