Abstract
618,146. Dividing by fusion. KANDEL, C. Oct. 25, 1946, No. 31760. [Class 83 (iv)] In an electric cutting-torch for underwater use, a tubular electrode 11 held in a collet 29 is clamped by an insulated sleeve-nut 31 in axial connection with the bore 22 of a head 10 having a replaceable flashback-damper 12 and a transverse connector 13 joined by resilient insulating tubing 15 to the oxygen supply valve 16 independently supported by a rigid insulating tubular handle 17 screwed to the head 10. The flashback-damper 12 comprises a wire mesh roll 23<SP>1</SP> in a perforated cylinder 26 closely fitting the head bore 22 and further mesh discs 28<SP>1</SP> seated in the inner end of the connector 13. The electric supply cable 18 is soldered into the head and its insulating sheath 18<SP>1</SP> is gripped by an insulating jacket 20 and cover 43 surrounding the back of the head 10. For sealing a flexible washer 50 is fitted between the sleevenut 31 and the jacket 43 and insulating compound fills any spaces between the head 10 and jacket 43. In the event of a flashback not being sufficiently cooled by the meshes 23<SP>1</SP>, 28 and narrow passages, the tube 15 is free to distend and if bursting occurs the gases are discharged from the handle 17 through a vent 51 in the flanged nipple 38 supporting the gas valve 16.
