Abstract
Homogeneous copolymers of two or more substances with different rates of polymerization are produced by adding during the polymerization all the monomeric constituents so that their proportion during polymerization is kept constant, and if monomer concentrations lying within the "critical area" are employed, the absolute monomer concentrations are also kept constant. The "critical area" of concentration is that in which the absolute concentration has a great effect on the properties of the polymer and ranges from zero to between 5 and 7 per cent by weight in emulsion polymerization and to approximately 15 per cent in solvent polymerization. The addition of fresh monomers may be continuous or intermittent. The process is applicable to the copolymerization of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride and the examples describe its application also to emulsion polymerization of (1) vinyl chloride and methyl methacrylate and (2) vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate. Specification 593,292 is referred to.
