[Class 58] [Also in Group XXV] In an apparatus for holding a bag or sack open for filling of the type comprising a plurality of complementary holding members which engage the inner face of the bag near its mouth, one at least being movable relative to the others so as to tension the mouth of the bag outwardly, the movable member is spring loaded and releasable catch means are provided so as to hold this member against the action of the spring while fitting the bag. As shown a stand 13, of bent angle section is attached to an upright plate 11 which closes the open end of a tundish 10 U- shaped in plan. Pivotally mounted in a bracket 14 is a frame 15 comprising a shallow D-shaped plate 16 level with the bottom of the tundish serrated at 16a. A fixed holding member comprising an angle section rib 17 with a D-shaped horizontal edge serrated at 17a is provided level with the end of the tundish. A lever 20 formed with a handle 23 pivoted in a bracket 21 on the plate 11 has underneath a notch 19 in which engages the upper edge 18a of an angle section cross-bar 18 of the frame 15. The lever is located in a stirrup 22 on the cross bar 18 and has a stop 24 to engage the stirrup when the frame 15 is urged outwardly by a coil spring 25. A leg 26 secured to the tundish forms a tripod with the stand and preferably detachable and adjustable extensions 27 with feet 28 are provided. The bag is fitted bv placing it round the parts 16, 17 such that its inner face is gripped below the hem by the serrations 16a, 17a, and on raising the lever 20 the frame 15 is urged outwardsby the spring 25 and maintains an outward tension keeping the bag mouth open. The apparatus may be constructed to form part of a filling chute attached to a large hopper or bunker or as a separate machine supported on a suitable base and could incorporate single, twin or any number of units. Modifications are described having twin and 4 units and means are provided to direct the material into the bag required. In a further modification (Fig. 4 not shown) described with reference to a twin set, the movable member is telescopically mounted on the base of the tundish and the lever has teeth engaging an aperture in a bracket carried by the member to maintain the member retracted. Springs are associated with the telescopic tubular parts to urge the member outwardly and the teeth on the lever are adapted to maintain the member retracted when put in that position.
