Abstract
616,856. Preventing corrosion by sulphuric acid. SOC. D'ELECTRO-CHIMIE. D'ELECTRO-METALLURGIE ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D'UGINE. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27610. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1945. [Class 123(i)] Stainless steel sheet or apparatus is made resistant to corrosion by sulphuric acid by a method employing the steps (a) submitting the surfaces which may later come in contact with the sulphuric acid to a uniform attack by acid limited to a loss of metal nf the order of 150 grams per square metre (b) passivation treatment comprising either a period of exposure to moist air whilst still wet with acid or an electrolytic action set up by the passage of cement from an electrode arranged within the apparatus to the walls of the apparatus whilst filled with acid. The steps (a) and (b) may be taken successively or simultaneously. In the case of sheet metal treated by the above process welded joints employed in the subsequent fabrication of the apparatus are pickled with sodium fluoride and nitric acid.
