Abstract

616,390. Piston-rods. PETERS & CO., Ltd., G. D., and MASON, J. R. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26436. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A fluid-pressure engine for opening a door provided with other means for automatically closing it has a piston-rod formed in two relatively slidable portions connected respectively to the piston and the door or frame, so that the door can be opened manually without moving the piston of the engine. In the form shown the cylinder 1 has a cap 4, with fluid passage 6, ball-jointed to a bracket 21 on the wall and the piston-rod is pivoted at 14 to a bracket on the door ; the piston-rod comprises two telescoping tubes 2, 3, the outer of which is secured to the piston 7 and the inner, which abuts against the piston, to a member 9, with air passage 24, forming one member of the pivot 14. Normally the two parts of the pistonrod move together, being under compression by the fluid during opening of the door and from the door during closing, but if the power fails the piston and tube 2 remain stationary while the tube 3 can move freely with the door when the latter is opened manually, the passage 24 allowing air to pass freely to and from the interior of the tube. In a modification the tube 2 abuts against the member 9; in further modifications either or each of the tubes 2, 3 may be replaced by a smaller tube or a solid rod, and if the two tubes, or the outer tube (which may be either 2 or 3) and the cylinder, are not of a diameter to make contact over their whole length an annular guide member or spider is attached to one of the parts in question.
