Abstract
615,991. Phonograph apparatus. PHILCO PRODUCTS, Inc., (formerly PHILCO RADIO & TELEVISION CORPORATION), and DEAVER, E. O. April 18, 1946, No. 12014. Convention date, April 18, 1945. [Class 40 (ii)] A phonograph apparatus, adapted to play records without effort by the user other than the insertion and and removal of the records and the operation of a door or like member, comprises a case with a slot-like aperture 10 through which a record 12 is inserted so as to rest on a turntable 9, and a door or flap 14, over said aperture, which when opened and closed stops and starts the turntable 9 revolving, operates a retractable centre-pin 16 and lifts the pick-up arm 8 from the record and lowers it at the starting position, feeler members 47, 48 being provided which set the starting position of the pick-up and set a stop 75 to locate records according to their diameter. The lid 14 is coupled by a link 35 to a sliding plate 29 with a downward bent portion 73 and an inclined slot 72 which engages a pin 71 on the retractable centre-pin 16. A lug 45 on the sliding plate 29 is connected to the rear end of the pick-up arm 8 by a spring 43 and a cord 40 which passes over pulleys 41, 42 and causes the stylus 26 to be lifted from the record and swung outwardly when the door 14 is opened, and lowered at the start of the record when the door 14 is closed. At the same time, a mercury-switch 84, connected in circuit with the motor 23, is tilted by the sloping surface 95 on the sliding plate 29, so that the circuit is broken whilst the door 14 is open. The L-shaped feeler members 47, 48 which are pivoted at points 49, 50 respectively have elongated holes at their inner ends, which embrace a movable pin 78, and rollers 58, 59 at their outer ends which are biassed towards each other by a spring 56, their normal position being determined by an adjustable stop 57 whose location is adjusted so that the rollers 58, 59 are just clear of a 10-inch record. The feeler member 48 carries a stop member 60 against which the pick-up arm 8 rests at the start of a record. When a 12-inch record is inserted, the feeler members 47, 48 are forced apart, and the pin 78 displaced forwardly, so that the stop 75 is raised and the edge of the record is located by an abutment 74. When the door 14 is closed, a latch member 64, coupled to the sliding plate 29, engages the lower end 63 of the pin 78, so that the rollers 58, 59 are held clear of the edge of the record, as in the chain-dotted position in Fig. 3. During playing of a record, the flat plate 96 at the end of lever 27 attached to the pick-up arm spindle 24 slides over the resilient end 90 of a pivoted lever 89 attached to the bracket 85 carrying the mercury-switch. 84. When the stylus 26 reaches the eccentric inner groove 97, the oscillating motion of the plate 96 tilts the bracket 85 and mercury-switch 84 against the frictional resistance of a member 91, Fig. 11 (not shown), so that current to the motor is interrupted. Motion is imparted to the turntable by the motor-shaft 22 via a spring-loaded intermediate pulley 18. Specifications 615,992 and 615,993 are referred to.
