Abstract
615,727. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 29, 1945, No. 25371. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] A target of a cathode-ray tube is made by condensing an alkali halide or magnesium oxide on to a support whilst subjecting the material simultaneously to bombardment by electrons, ions, alpha particles, photons, X-rays, or gamma rays, so as to control the opacity of the material deposited on the support. The alkali halide used is preferably potassium chloride, which may contain a small amount of thorium chloride, hydroxides, or traces of cadmium or magnesium. The mixture is placed in a platinum container 12, Fig. 1, and heated by a coil 14 to vaporize it on to the tube wall 6 or on to a separate transparent support adjacent to the wall 6, the pressure being kept at 10<-4> mm. Hg. Simultaneously, the wall 6 is scanned by an electron beam from gun 8, the electron velocity and current density being variable to vary the opacity of the target. The final target may have alternate layers of transparent and translucent material, in which case an intermittent electron bombardment is used, and in this case the varying heat of bombardment may also vary the transparency of the target. Alternatively, pattern markings or indicia may be produced, the indicia being opaque or transparent, by scanning only certain areas of the target. A similar result may be obtained by a removable mask which shields certain parts of the target from electron bombardment. The indicia may be formed in one or more of the multiple layers, and two sets of indicia may be used in the outer layer of each side of the target. The target may in use be viewed by reflected or transmitted light. Schmidt optical systems may project the " image " on to a viewing screen. Specification 621,729 is referred to.
