Abstract

614,250. Ash removal from a furnace. DANIELS, A. W., and B. V. C. INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTIONS, Ltd. May 27, 1946, No. 16047. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] An ash hopper 1, Fig. 2, which is formed with sides 2, 3, 4, converging to a longitudinally inclined base 11 having gate 14 at its lower front exit 13, has a series of upwardly and downwardly - directed water jet assemblies 18 for washing away the ash. Fig. 2. Gate 14 is swung open by means of handle 16 and the jet assembly 181 plays water through the entrance. When sufficient ash has flowed away to uncover twin jet assembly 18<11> these two jets squirt water up the slope into the ash mass. Next, jet assembly 18<111> is uncovered as the ash retreats and is brought into operation to squirt water down the slope. Next, jet assembly 18<@1V> is uncovered and in turn squirts water up the slope into the mass. The efflux passes out into sluiceway 19 where it meets a further jet 18<1>. The brick wall lining 6 of hopper 1 is metal-faced at 9. The base 11 supports interlocking hollow metal blocks 10 through which runs cooling water from jet 64. Fig. 4. Jet assembly 21 pivots about hollow spindle 22 through which water is fed to nozzle 24. When water is admitted under pressure, the reaction of the water forces the jet assembly 21 into the position of Fig. 4 against stop 26 so that jet 24 may squirt water over hopper floor 10 and, when water is cut off, the jet assembly swings round under the .weight of counterweight 31 until the second stop 26<1> comes against the metal floor and presents the flat surface 21a into the flooring, so avoiding any impedance to the water flowing over the blocks 10. Fig. 8. A water jet may also be introduced up or down the slope through the brick lining 6 of the wall by means of nozzle 39, the housing 34 of which is secured to inlet pipe 36 which slides within supply pipe 37. Inrush of water automatically slides the inlet pipe and housing forward so that the jet jumps up to spray water inside the hopper and, when the water is cut off, the housing recedes into the wall under the action of spring 61 expanding against collar 50 fixed on the inlet pipe. Alternatively, handle 62 may effect the displacement of the jet. Fig. 13. Similar to Fig. 8. The displacement of jet housing 34 due to pressure of water works against counterweight 53 which restores the housing beneath floor 10 when the water is cut off. The jets may all be controlled electrically or hydraulically from a single panel and come into play automatically as required.
