Abstract
614,039. Electrodeposition of metals. UDYLITE CORPORATION. July 2, 1946, No. 19682. Convention date, July 9, 1945, [Class 41] A process of electrodepositing nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc, cadmium, copper or antimony comprises electrolysing an aqueous acid solution of a salt of the metal to be deposited and a minor proportion of an addition agent comprising a soluble sulpho-monocarboxylic acid ester of a water-soluble aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, the hydrogen of at least one hydroxy group of which is replaced by an alkyl radical containing from eight to eighteen carbon atoms, the sulpho-monocarboxylic acid radical containing not more than six carbon atoms. The preferred addition agent may be represented by the formula R-(O-C2H4)n-O-OC-YSO3M, where R is an alkyl radical containing from eight to eighteen carbon atoms, M is a cation such as hydrogen, alkali metal or a metal corresponding to that of the metal being deposited, Y is the carbon-hydrogen residue of a sulpho-monocarboxylic acid, and v and w are small whole numbers such as 1 or 2. The addition agents are used in concentrations of from about .05 to about .5 grams per litre of electrolyte solution. The solution may also contain an aryl sulphuric acid brightener or a brightener in the form of a soluble compound containing the group -SO2.N=. Examples are given of nickel, cobalt, copper, iron, zinc, cadmium, and antimony baths, in which the addition agent is the sodium salt of mono-lauryl ether of diethylene glycol sulphoacetate. Specification 525,847 is referred to.
