Abstract

613,949. Electric furnaces. NORSKE AKTIESELSKAB FOR ELEKTROKEMISK INDUSTRI. March 21, 1946, No. 8804. Convention date, June 16, 1944. [Class 39 (iii)] A closed electric furnace having a water-cooled metallic roof 12, is provided with water-cooled charging shafts 7 disposed around each electrode 1 in a manner providing an annular gas chamber between each electrode 1 and its surrounding shafts 7. The upper limit of each gas chamber may comprise a vertically adjustable electrode contact arrangement ror varying the gas chamber volume whilst the inner wall of the shafts 7 may also be vertically adjustable for the same purpose. The lower edge of the shafts 7 are shaped such that the charge is disposed in the most favourable manner. Radial gas conduits 11, between the shafts 7, permit the escape of gas from the gas chambers to exit pipes 13. The gas conduits 11 are provided with upper inspection doors 15 constructed as explosion valves. The water-cooled roof 12, which may be of interchangeable sections magnetically and electrically insulated from each other, is suspended from rods 14. Specification 608,743 and French Specification 809,929 are referred to.
