Abstract
613,847. Discharge lamps. COLE, Ltd., E. K., and HAEGELE, F. G. A. Nov. 23, 1945, No. 31564. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp comprises cathodes a, each of which comprises a core of electrically conductive, highly porous, refractory material, having incorporated in it a thermionically active material, and two wires b, c interwound in spaced relation on the core, each wire making isolated points of contact with the core, one end of one wire being connected to one terminal of the lamp and one end of the other wire being connected to another terminal of the lamp at the same end thereof. Each wire b, c may be overwound with another wire d to make isolated points of contact with the core or the wires b, c may be provided with integral projections. The cores a may contain grooves to retain the wires b, c. One wire c on one core is connected to the other wire c on the other core by a current limiting resistance e or other impedance of a few thousand ohms. The remaining two wires b are connected to the A.C. mains supply in series with a stabilising impedance (for example a choke). An auxiliary electrode g in the form of a conducting metallic strip deposited on the tube wall and either connected to one wire b, c, directly or arranged in close spacial relationship therewith may be used for the dissipation of random wall charges which impede starting. When current is supplied to the circuit a multiplicity of small arcs occur between the rough cores a and the surrounding wires b, c, which serve to produce highly-activated hot spots acting as cathode spots for initiating the main discharge, the restarting peak at each half-cycle of the discharge being reduced, thus improving the power factor.
