Abstract

612,895. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and CADMAN, N. G. June 5, 1946, No. 17084. [Class 103 (i)] In an automatic brake system for a tractortrailer vehicle in which a brake pipe 6, 8 on the tractor is connected to a brake pipe 15 on the trailer, e.g. by a hose and coupling 16, an isolating cock 9 is connected in the pipe 6, 8 and is byepassed by a non-return valve 11 which permits flow of pressure fluid between the tractor and trailer in one direction only. The system shown comprises on the tractor a driver's valve 2 which operates to vent the pipe 6 and connect a main reservoir pipe 5 with the tractor brake cylinder. If the cock 9 is open, the pipes 8, 15 are also vented and a control valve 12 operates to connect a reservoir 13 on the trailer-with the trailer brake cylinders 14. On operation of the valve 2 to effect release of the brakes, the pipe 6 is connected to the pipe 5, and the valve 12 operates to vent the cylinders 14 and connect the reservoir 13 to the pipe 15 for recharging. If the cock 9 is closed to isolate the brakes on an empty trailer, the valve 11 allows pressure fluid to flow from the pipe 6 to the pipes 8, 15 to make up leakage losses in the trailer system so that maximum pressure is available from the reservoir 13 to .apply the trailer brakes if the coupling 16 breaks. The cock 9 and valve 11 may be combined in a single unit mounted in the driver's cab with the handle 10 in a convenient position. Specification 563,588 is referred to.
