Abstract
Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-butane or n-pentane are converted to the corresponding branched chain hydrocarbons or into mixtures containing branched chain hydrocarbons by heating them to 50-300 DEG C. in the presence of an anhydrous metal halide such as aluminium chloride and in the presence of hydrogen sulphide or inert gases containing hydrogen sulphide as catalyst activating agent. An example is given of the conversion of n-butane to isobutane, the stream of n-butane containing 17 per cent hydrogen sulphide.
