612,685. Variable-speed gearing. HAMRE, K. B. May 30, 1946, No. 16464. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1940. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed device comprises driving discs 2 slidingly splined to the driving shaft 1 of a motor M which frictionally engage driven discs 5 slidingly splined to a drum 4 secured to a hollow driven shaft 8 on which is secured a pulley 12. The motor M is rigidly secured to a slide 13 which may be displaced vertically by rotation of a hand wheel 15 and screw 14, thus effecting speed changes by varying the position of frictional engagement of the discs 5 on the discs 2. Engagement between the discs is ensured by a spring 9 housed within the shaft 8, acting on a disc 6 secured to the outer disc 5. The loading of the spring 9 may be varied by a bolt 10 screwed into the shaft 8. The device may also function as a clutch mechanism by providing a system of levers connected to the hub 7 of the disc 6, which upon actuation, compress the spring 9 so that the driving and driven discs are separated.
